Complaints with BBB rise

The Better Business Bureau of Northern Nevada (which also serves the Lake Tahoe basin) said last week the number of complaints filed by consumers rose 14 percent in 2008 compared with a year earlier.

Consumers filed 4,027 complaints against businesses in the region, said Tim Johnston, president of BBB of Northern Nevada.

Payday loan companies received the largest number of complaints with 378, a 46 percent increase over the previous year. Payday lenders also received the largest number of inquiries with 6,027, a 50 percent increase over 2007, Johnston said.
