High Desert Internet Services, finding its present wireless equipment being phased out by the manufacturer, has contracted with San Diego firm Solectek for broadband wireless equipment.
The company uses microwave radio towers to deliver high-speed data to customers who aren't served by traditional technology such as cable modems or DSL.
The upgrade, says HDIS owner Doug Dawson, will require trips to mountaintops around northern Nevada to upgrade broadcast facilities. The work, he says, is nothing that he and his one employee can't handle.
High Desert Internet Services carries a customer base evenly split between commercial and residential, says Dawson.
It serves corridors stretching from Cold Springs south to Minden and from Carson City east to Silver Springs and through Yerington to Smith and Mason valleys.
From its warehouse service area at Patrick, it's worked east to Fernley and has plans to serve Lovelock come summer. From there, Dawson looks eastward along the Interstate 80 corridor, to serve Winnemucca as demand grows.
