Lead-safe training set for contractors

The Builders Association of Northern Nevada will offer training this month to builders and remodelers who face new EPA requirements on working with lead-based paint.

Any contractor who disturbs at least 6 square feet of painted surface on the interior or 20 square feet on the exterior of homes, childcare facilities, and schools built before 1978 is required to be certified.

The certification includes notification before work begins as well as use of lead-safe work practices. The rules take effect in April. Fines for noncompliance range from $5,000 to $32,000 per violation, per day.

The Builders will provide certification training from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 15 at TMCC/IGT Applied Technology Center in Reno. Registration information is available at www.thebuilders.com.
