Reno-Sparks Chamber puts clean energy technology into focus

A wide-ranging look at the new world of energy technology everything from its potential as a driver for Nevada's economy to its uses in helping individual businesses become more profitable will be highlighted in an Energy Forum sponsored by the Reno Sparks Chamber of Commerce this month.

The half-day event is scheduled the morning of Sept. 14 at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa.

Mary Simmons, chair of the chamber's board, said the organization expects to attract more than 200 people for the forum.

At least 20 exhibitors ranging from suppliers of energy-saving devices to developers of large renewable energy projects are expected.

"It's an opportunity to learn something to take back to your business," she said.

Among speakers, David K. Owens, executive vice president of business operations for the Edison Electric Institute, will provide an overview of federal energy policy and incentives.

Jeff Ceccarelli, senior vice president of electric supply for NV Energy, will discuss the business climate for clean energy strategies in Nevada and steps that utilities in the state have taken to increase their purchases of power produced by renewable sources.

A series of breakout sessions, meanwhile, will cover four aspects of clean energy:

* Energy-efficiency and conservation steps that businesses and individuals can take to reduce their utility costs and boost their profitability.

* Recent developments and the future of electric vehicles in Nevada and elsewhere.

* Renewable generation systems that can be installed by businesses and individuals and the incentives that are available.

* Steps to develop a professional and technically skilled workforce in northern Nevada to meet the needs of the clean energy industry.

The event begins with registration and the opening of exhibits at 7:30 a.m. The forum sessions begin at 8:30.

Cost is $25 for members of the Reno Sparks Chamber and $35 for non-members. Tickets are available by calling 337-3030 or through www.renosparkschamber.org/events.
