Obituary: Ethel Jean (Hale) Van Nuys

Born: June 26, 1921, in Berkeley, California.

Ethel Jean (Hale) Van Nuys was a retired medical-legal secretary, having worked for the Nevada Legislature (senate), Attorney General's Office and the Department of Administration for industrial injuries as secretary, as well as for the California Veterans' Home, Yountville, and the Napa State Hospital in Napa, Calif., as senior stenographer and tumor registrar, and the Department of Administration, Carson City.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gordon P. Van Nuys, M.D. She is survived by her three children, Herbert Hale Schulte of Oklahoma, Jean A. Williams, Brookings, Ore., and Robert J. Schulte of Smith River, Calif.; sister Helen D. Hale of San Francisco; cousins Jim Clark, Markleeville, Calif., Joan Thompson, Sacramento, Calif., Kim Gastman, Auburn, Calif., Helena Jacobson of Washington; nephew Michael Kenneth Pierce (aka Kenneth Garfield Hale), Whitehorse, Youkon, Canada.

She originated the George C. Yount Parlor #322 of the Native Daughters of the Golden West in 1957 at the Veterans' Home in Yountville. She served on the Napa State Hospital C.S.E.A. (California State Employees Association) as a membership and recording secretary. She was active in bowling, golf, Red Hatters Society, Pinochle Club. Other hobbies were crocheting, reading and GeoCaching (world wide treasure hunting). She volunteered at the Azalea Middle School Library in her early years in Brookings.
