Proposal examines death row appeals

(AP) - Senator Don Gustavson of Sparks says it is time to stop the endless loop of appeals by death row inmates.

Gustavson told the Senate Judiciary panel Friday that SB283 would end the chain of appeals that allow death row inmates to question the quality of their attorneys. Gustavson calls such challenges delay tactics and do nothing in terms of presenting new evidence. SB283 would change the law so that the state would have the option to supply an attorney for these appeals. Current law makes it mandatory.
