ATV rider killed in Lyon County Saturday afternoon

The driver of an ATV was killed Saturday afternoon about 4:30 p.m. when he was struck by a car as he tried to cross Highway 50 East in Lyon County.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Dan Gordon said the driver was following two other riders who'd successfully crossed the highway, when he was hit in the eastbound lanes by a vehicle. The posted speed limit on that stretch of highway in Stagecoach is 65 mph.

Gordon said the ATV rider was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, said Gordon.

The name of the driver of the vehicle was not immediately available.

The accident backed up traffic in both directions for 90 minutes, Gordon said.
