Nevada State Museum presents 'Walking in the Footsteps of the Donner Party'

Frank X. Mullen Jr. presents the lecture, Walking in the Footsteps of the Donner Party, plus a book signing at the Nevada State Museum from 6-8 p.m. April 28.

Mullen's book, Donner Party Chronicles, will be available for purchase through the Museum Store. The author will be on hand to sign books beginning at 6 p.m.; the lecture begins at 7 p.m. Visitors may also view exhibits in the main building, including Nevada: The Photography of Cliff Segerblom, from 6-7 p.m.

Mullen, historian and author, takes audiences on a 2,000-mile walk across the continent in his presentation about the Donner party wagon train of 1846. Mullen traces the cascade of events that led to the families being trapped in the Sierra Nevada during the terrible winter of 1846-47. He tells the tale of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances and explores the physical and moral dilemmas they faced.

Be part of Dayton's community garden

An informational meeting and signup for the Dayton Community Garden will be from 6-7 p.m. April 27 at the Tuff Luck Ranch, 175 River Road in Dayton

The garden is being sponsored by F.O.C.U.S as part of the 1,000 Backyard Farms campaign, in conjunction with Hungry Mother Organics, Dayton's Community Roots and Healthy Communities Coalition of Dayton.

The goal is to help Daytonites become self-sufficient in our expensive, uncertain times.

There will be no charge for participation, and the garden will be fenced with water provided. It is suggested attendees bring a lawn chair and a jacket.

Lyon fair reaches out to veterans

A Community Wellness Fair with veterans and military family outreach will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 7 at Silver Stage High School, 3755 Spruce Ave., in Silver Springs.

The fair includes live entertainment, gardening information, cooking demonstrations, free HIV tests, an Ask-a-Doctor booth, free immunizations, fitness relay with free kids' helmets, resources for healthy living, a mobile VA unit, and safe prescription drug disposal.

The event is organized by the Silver Stage Community Task Force, a partner of the Healthy Communities Coalition in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Rural Health and the Veterans Affairs Sierra Nevada Healthcare System.

Bark, Whine & Dine to raise funds for Parks 4 Paws.

Parks 4 Paws, is holding its 3rd annual Bark, Whine & Dine May 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Fuji Park Event Center.

The event is hosted by Mayor Bob Crowell and will have barbecue from Locals, microbrews, a silent auction and raffle drawings. There will be live music by CHS Link Crew. Cost is $25 and tickets may be purchased at paws4parks.com, or by calling Ilona Strull at 721-4931.

In conjunction with the event, the group is raffling a quilt entitled Man's Best Friend. Raffle tickets are on sale with the drawing to be held at the Bark, Whine & Dine need not be present to win.

Dayton club hosts town hall meeting

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Dayton will host a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. May 18 at Dayton High School to announce the upcoming summer program and fundraiser. The club also wants to update the community on progress and the need for committee volunteers and support.

Local committee members, along with Chief Professional Officer Travis Crowder, Director of Program Development Christina Hurt, and Dayton Units Director Dan McLaughlin will be on hand to answer questions and update the community on all things Dayton.

The need to accommodate low-income families is a must, and in order to do that, the club needs help from the local community. They also wish to address the possible change in school hours and days, as well as how the Boys & Girls Club will assist with these issues.

Run for the Bucket planning for 5K

Put your best foot forward for free. The fifth annual walk/run/bike will be May 21 starting at 9 a.m., so come early to register.

Run for the Bucket is sponsored by Court Appointed Special Advocates, Muscle Powered and We Can Carson City.

It will be held at Riverview Park at the east end of Fifth Street.

The event is free because organizers know how difficult times are. Donations will be accepted in large buckets at the event. Spare change, checks and large or small bills will be accepted.

The 5K course is along the Mexican Ditch Trail.

There will be lots of goodies and information for everyone.

DBA to host June downtown bike, car festival

The Carson City Downtown Business Association is hosting its inaugural "Legends of the West Bike & Car Fest," June 3-5.

This event is closing the streets of downtown Carson City and opening its streets up to bikes and cars in 16 different classes with trophies being awarded.

Activities include a show and shine, motorcycle agility demonstration, treasure hunts, evening cruise, vendors, food, Elks pancake breakfast, Miss Legends contest, Legends wedding and an awards ceremony. Live entertainment will be at Firkin Friday and Rock the House Saturday night, as well as a Sock Hop with DJ "EM."

Carson City seeks volunteer

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving approximately 10-16 hours per month on the Carson City Airport Authority. The Airport Authority is a seven-member board that oversees all matters pertaining to the Carson City Airport.

There is one position open for a four-year term that will expire in October 2013. The opening on the Authority is for industrial. The person must be a manufacturer within a three-mile radius of the Carson City Airport, but not a Fixed Base Operator.

Applications will be accepted until May 30. Under the terms of Assembly Bill 103, and signed by the governor, the area for such members was enlarged to a three-mile radius of the airport. If a volunteer cannot be found, supervisors are permitted to appoint a member who represents the general public.

'Get on the Bus' tour to cover Carson River Watershed

The Carson Water Subconservancy District will host a lively and informational "Get on the Bus!" Carson River Watershed tour from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 16 and May 17.

The tour will go from the headwaters in Alpine County, Calif., to the terminus at Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge in Churchill County. The tour will begin each day at the Carson City Smith's grocery store parking lot on East William Street.

Featured speakers will discuss topics such as the history of the Carson River, the Alpine Decree, Wild and Scenic, water quality and quantity challenges, floodplain protection, and many more.

"This tour will provide people a good opportunity to view the entire watershed and better understand how each area of the watershed is inter-related," said Ed James, general manager of the subconservancy district:

Members of the public are encouraged to attend and participate. This is an opportunity to share ideas and add a voice to public discussion.

The cost to register is $100, or $110 after April 22, and includes lunch and snacks. Space is limited, registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pancake breakfast to benefit Food for Thought

Parkway Manor Apartments will host a pancake breakfast fundraiser to benefit Food for Thought from 7-11 a.m. Saturday at 603 E. College Parkway. Breakfast will be prepared by the Carson City Kiwanis Club.

There will be no fee for the breakfast, however donations of money or non-perishable food items will be appreciated and given directly to Food for Thought, a local non-profit organization that reaches out to school age students on free and reduced lunch programs so that they do not go hungry on the weekends.

Food for the breakfast has been donated by Trader Joe's, Raley's, Grocery Outlet and Safeway.

Social to welcome Vietnam veterans

Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home Spring Social and Raffle will take place 6-9 p.m. May 5 at High Sierra Brewing Co., 302 N. Carson St.

The social will preceded by a business meeting at 5:30 p.m.

All Vietnam veterans are invited to the party for free with others $10 at the door. The event features appetizers and live entertainment.

All proceeds benefit the local homeless veterans project.

Free foreclosure class for homeowners

Nevada Legal Services is offering a free foreclosure information class available to any homeowner in Nevada at 2 p.m. May 10 at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St.

The class will focus on the foreclosure process including mandatory mediation and the government sponsored loss mitigation options.

Dayton Food Pantry's spring yard sale May 7

A big spring yard sale to raise funds for the busy nonprofit, Dayton Food Pantry, will be held on May 7 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 4 Enterprise Way in Dayton.

Director Freida Carbery said donations of items for the yard sale are welcome, and can be dropped off at the Food Pantry Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Emergency Food: Dayton Food Pantry is open for emergency food needs Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4 Enterprise Way on Highway 50. The building space is generously donated by BCB Ventures.

Regular Distribution Days: Normal distribution days for commodities will be on the third Saturday of each month from noon to 4 p.m. at Sutro Elementary School in Dayton at 190 Dayton Village Parkway. Special thanks goes to Sutro Elementary's principal, custodians, and counselor and Lyon School District for their generous contribution of this comfortable space for distribution days.
