College business-plan teams win cash

Collegiate teams from northern Nevada schools took five of seven awards in the seventh annual Donald W. Reynolds Governor's Cup competition last week.

The competition overseen by Nevada's Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology provides cash prizes $20,000 for first, $10,000 for second, $5,000 for third for winning business plans developed by students.

In the graduate student category, a team from the University of Nevada, Reno, took third place with SENSE.tech, a plan to develop point-of-care detection of tuberculosis through handheld breath analysis equipment.

In the undergraduate division, second place went to Completely Off-Grid, a UNR plan for factory-built self-sufficient homes.

Third place in the undergraduate competition went to Bumblebee Blooms, a plan developed by Truckee Meadows Community College students for a retail florist.

GC Fuels LLC, a UNR team, won the $5,000 Lt. Governor's Award for a business plan emphasizing renewable or green fuels. The team proposed technology to improve efficiency in biodiesel production.

Top awards in the undergraduate and graduate categories went to teams from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

In the graduate category, Scuba Solutions LLC proposed development of improved scuba gear.

In the undergraduate division, a team called "Eighteen at Eighteen" proposed development of digital books to be delivered through smartphones.
