Car show to benefit children in Mound House wreck

A car show Friday will help with the medical costs and funeral expenses for a 3-year-old Carson City boy critically injured in a Mound House wreck last week that claimed the life of his 8-year-old sister and father.

Wayne Wheeler, a Carson City sheriff's deputy and member of the Carson City Deputy Sheriffs Association said his group has quickly organized a Cruise In to benefit Tasha Johnson, fiance of Deputy Don Gibson, president of the association.

Johnson's daughter Alexis Melendrez, 8, was killed in a car wreck in Mound House on Friday that also killed her father David Melendrez, 30.

Johnson's son Colton, 3, is fighting for his life in a Reno hospital.

The money raised will go toward funeral and medical costs for the children.

"This is going to be a good time to come hang out and show your support for this family," said Wheeler.

The Cruise In is open to any vehicles with a $10 donation. It will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Sonic Drive-In, 1856 E. College Parkway.

"Its a spot to cruise in. Bring your car motorcycle whatever," said Wheeler.

Plaques will be awarded for People's Choice among other categories.

Donations also can be made to the Alexis and Colton Melendrez Fund at any Heritage Bank Branch, Account No. 2000008744.

"Tasha needs our support," said Wheeler.
