Program offers look at petrogyphs, pictographs

As part of an in-depth look at Nevada's petroglyphs and pictographs, Pat Barker, retired Bureau of Land Management state archaeologist, will explore the different styles of rock art which are spread across the state, and investigate possible meanings for this enigmatic art form.

Sponsored by the Nevada Rock Art Foundation, the event includes a free public lecture at 6 p.m. May 11 at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.

Information Hour provides details of volunteering for CASA

Learn more about volunteering to becoming a guardian ad litem and speaking up for a child. CASA of Carson City will hold an Information Hour on May 3, at 5:30 p .m., at the Carson City Juvenile Court, 1545 E. Fifth St.

CASA volunteers are appointed to speak up for the best interest of children removed from their parents' custody due to abuse or neglect. Being a CASA volunteer requires research, communication, patience and caring. It is rewarding and challenging. CASA volunteers make a difference for kids.

Teams now forming for Carson City's Relay For Life

Carson City area walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. This celebration brings together numerous groups and individuals concerned about cancer in a unified effort to fight back.

Teams of enthusiastic residents will gather at Centennial Field for an overnight relay from 10 a.m. July 16th to 10 a.m. July 17th. The event celebrates people who have battled cancer and their caregivers and also remembers loved ones lost.

Last year, more than 70 teams took part in the Relay. This year, organizers hope to register 100. Teams from across Carson City are signing up now and more teams are still needed.

Nonprofits invited to apply for cars program

Carson City Senior Center Executive Director Janice McIntosh announced the center has been selected as a finalist in Toyota's 100 Cars for Good program.

Toyota's 100 Cars for Good program will award 100 vehicles over the course of 100 days to 100 deserving nonprofit organizations based on votes from the public. A total of 500 finalists were selected from a field of about 5,000 based on their application as reviewed by an independent panel of judges who are experts in the fields of philanthropy and social responsibility.

"We are vying for the opportunity to win a new Toyota vehicle to deliver meals to our Meals on Wheels clients," McIntosh said.

Residents can support the senior center by voting for at www.facebook.com/toyota.

"For this program, the center must create a two-minute video explaining why they should win and how they would use the vehicle. Each of the 100 days of voting, five different organizations of similar size will vie for the highest number of votes to win the vehicle.

Rappel down Grand Sierra for Special Olympics

Special Olympics Nevada is offering potential donors a chance to rappel down the side of the Grand Sierra in Reno on June 4

The opportunity is open only to the first 100 people who register and pledge to raise at least $1,000 for the Special Olympics. It's organized by Over the Edge for Special Olympics Nevada. No experience or equipment necessary.

The Special Olympics provides free, year round sports training and competition opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
