(AP) - Education advocates are telling state lawmakers that diverting room tax money from Nevada schools is a troubling trend that goes against the will of voters.
Washoe School Principals Association official Ron Dreher told the Assembly Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday that continuing to take money from education shows lawmakers don't support education.
The panel took no action on a measure to divert a portion of Clark and Washoe county room taxes earmarked for public schools to the state general fund until July 1, 2013.
Voters in Nevada's two most populous counties approved a 3 percent room tax hike as a way to increase funding for education.
The 2009 Legislature tapped the revenue, and Sandoval wants to continue do it again to add $221 million to the cash-strapped general fund.
