Uncle surrenders on murder charge

A Dayton man surrendered to Lyon County authorities Thursday afternoon in the alcohol-related death of his 14-year-old nephew.

Jeffrey Alan McCarthy, 44, who is charged with second-degree murder, appeared in Walker River Justice Court, where his attorney requested and was granted a bail reduction from $100,000 to $50,000.

According to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday, McCarthy provided alcohol to Kyle Johnston, his sister's teenage son, while the two were camping with others at Lake Lahontan over the Fourth of July weekend. On July 3, Kyle was found unresponsive on the beach. He was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center, where he died the next day.

Kyle's blood alcohol content was .40 percent, said Lyon County sheriff's Capt. Albert Torres.

McCarthy, whose parents appeared in court with him, will next be in court on Oct. 6.
