Virginia City hosts Civil War Days

The eighth annual Comstock Re-enactor's Call to Arms, The Battle that Never Was, will be held on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2-5, in Virginia City. The Comstock Civil War Re-enactors will put on a show for locals and visitors alike.

"A huge silver consignment is rumored to be leaving Virginia City for the South. Union troops have manned the city to protect the railroad convoy. It is hoped that union troops stationed at nearby Fort Churchill will protect the train if the Confederates try to capture the shipment. Both armies have sent out a call for reinforcements," said a visitors' bureau spokesman.

There will be a true period camp set up at Miners Park with tents, re-enactors and even a camp cook to show spectators how it really was during the Civil War era.

The Comstock Civil War Re-enactors are the only regional group to use cannons in their staged battles, and have partnered with the Virginia & Truckee Railroad to create a hold-up and ensuing battle with Confederate and Union troops.

Battle train tickets can be purchased in advance at www.VirginiaTruckee.com or reservations can be made by emailing ccwrbattletrains@

yahoo.com. Tickets may also be purchased at the train depot on F Street the day of the event.

The four-day event includes an educational school day, theater of "John Brown's Body," pancake breakfast, battle trains, Victorian tea, Civil War Battle in Gold Hill with VIP or bleacher seating, no-host barbecue, period dance and the annual Labor Day Parade at noon and a Civil War street battle 12:30 p.m. Sept. 5 on C Street in Virginia City.

Meet Nevada's First Lady, support the Mammovan

Jim and Alicia Eidel will host a fundraiser from 2-6 p.m. today at 4150 Meadwood Dr. to support the Mammovan Program and help the uninsured women in Nevada.

Participants can enjoy a barbecue, music by Hickory Switch and door prizes. The honorary chair and spokeswoman, Nevada's First Lady, Kathleen Sandoval, will be present at the fundraiser.

Too many women in Nevada have never had a mammogram. Lack of funds, transportation conflicts, or no insurance are the main reasons women have not protected their health with this breast cancer screening process. The Mammovan program provides low cost mammograms to the uninsured and brings the service to where women live and work.

For those who would like to make a tax deductible donation to the Mammovan, but are unable to attend the event, send your donation to Nevada Health Centers, Inc., 1802 N. Carson Street, Suite 100, Carson City, NV 89701. For more information, call 775-888-6625.
