Open enrollment for prepaid tuition program begins Dec. 1

The 2012 open enrollment for Nevada's Prepaid Tuition Program begins Dec. 1.

State Treasurer Kate Marshall said the theme of this year's program is "Their Dream, Your Promise, Our Plan."

The program enables parents, grandparents and other family members to lock in college tuition rates at today's prices by entering a contract to prepay tuition costs over time. Patients and others can pay a lump sum or spread the payments over as much as five years with 60 equal monthly payments. It is open for children from newborns through 9th-graders.

"The program is especially affordable if parents begin an account for newborn children with plans starting as low as $36 a month. Marshall said. "The earlier you open an account, the lower the overall cost."

Since the program's inception, 14,120 prepaid tuition contracts have been purchased by Nevadans.
