Letters to the Editor Feb. 11

I am a lifelong Nevada resident. I've watched my streams and lakes go from swimmable and fishable to a state of toxicity so much so I won't even let my dog play there.

I feel there are several contributing factors in this dilemma we are facing. We have excessive levels of nitrogen due to heavy use of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers by our agricultural community. We have a history of heavy metal mining which continues to this day. They penetrate deep into the earth stirring up argon, cadmium and lead, introducing them into our water table.

We recently bought 40 acres in Pershing County only to find that we were in the middle of a minefield - silver, gold and plutonium mines to be exact. We are concerned that our drinking water will be unfit as we are responsible for building a well.

We also live in a community rich in hunting, which is wonderful, but due to the recklessness of companies like Remington, Federal, and PCI, who are manufacturing bullets with cheap and toxic lead and plastic, they end up everywhere. I think the manufacturers have an obligation to be more mindful as well.

I love my family, and I love my home state, but I hate what has happened and continues to happen to this beautiful and once rich and diverse ecology. I just want my voice to be heard. I want to hold these contributors accountable, but I don't know where to begin.

I just want to say to the Carson High varsity girls basketball team, it was a wonderful season. You put in a wonderful, hard-working season.

To all the players, good, wonderful job. You are the best. I mean it from the bottom of my heart. To all the coaches, a wonderful job.

I will be back next season, and I support you all the way. Good job, ladies. You are the best. Thank you.
