UNR chief: Strong economy depends on higher ed

RENO (AP) - University of Nevada, Reno President Milton Glick says $59 million in cuts proposed under Gov. Brian Sandoval's budget would greatly diminish the university's role as a driver of economic development.

Speaking at a town hall meeting Wednesday, Glick said economic diversification can only be accomplished with a strong education system at both the K-12 and college level.

According to a Reno newspaper, Glick cited UNR recent successes in retaining students, improving graduation rates and diversifying enrollment.

He says budget cuts would mean reduced student success and less access to higher ed.

Budget cuts over the past two years have totaled $44 million and resulted in more than 400 positions being eliminated. Twenty-nine departments or divisions were closed, and 22 degree programs eliminated.
