Suspicious package closes Highway 395 in Douglas

Highway 395 through Douglas County was closed for about 30 minutes Wednesday afternoon while members of the Tahoe-Douglas Bomb Squad investigated a suspicious device.

The device was discovered at 1:33 p.m., after the driver of a black Toyota pickup was stopped Wednesday morning for a traffic violation. The driver was taken into custody for driving under the influence of drugs.

Deputies obtained a search warrant for the vehicle after a narcotics dog alerted on the vehicle, according to Sgt. Jim Halsey of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Halsey said deputies were searching the vehicle when they came across the device in the truck bed.

Upon finding the device, deputies cordoned off the area and sent for the bomb squad.

The highway was closed while members of the bomb squad examined the device.

Once it was found to be harmless, officers reopened the highway and confiscated the pickup.

Halsey said that in addition to the device, counterfeit currency was discovered in the pickup. He said federal authorities have been notified.
