Jottings: A usually grateful gentleman does not appear to great advantage chasing his hat on such a windy day.

A little girl about 6 years old was picked up by the wind, near Harris Bros' store and carried a distance of 10 feet but not injured.

120 YEARS AGO

Took a shot at 'em: A number of boys amused themselves by throwing stones and chunks of ice at a (Chinese man) driving a laundry wagon in Virginia City. He got down from the wagon, pulled a huge revolver and taking deliberate aim, fired at the crowd ... they retreated pell-mell. No one was struck, and it will be a few weeks before members of that gang of boys will engage in throwing stones at (Chinese men). Enterprise.

70 YEARS AGO

Nevada's legalized gambling industry poured more than 9 million dollars into the state's treasury during 1960.

Sen. Ernie Adler says he will sponsor emergency funding to get $1.8 million to rehabilitate the closed U.S. Mint Building. "It will save the taxpayers a great deal of money if it can be funded right away," Adler said. "We need to repair it, and the retrofit is relatively cheap compared to other projects."

10 YEARS AGO

112 Millennium scholars met the requirements to maintain the scholarship for the spring semester.
