13 apply to replace Nevada state senator Bill Raggio

RENO (AP) - Washoe County Commissioners will choose from 13 candidates to fill the state Senate seat being vacated by state Sen. Bill Raggio of Reno.

Raggio is the longest-serving state senator in Nevada history. The 84-year-old Republican is retiring before his term expires for health reasons.

A Reno newspaper says the list of candidates to replace him includes former legislators, two past state treasurers, past local elected officials, lawyers, business owners and citizen activists.

Commissioners are expected to vote on the replacement after interviewing candidates on Tuesday.

Raggio did not endorse

a successor.
