Letters to the editor Jan. 15

Thank you, Carson City, for supporting young man

Nevada is at the top of my list. In the weeks before Christmas, so many people, businesses and the Nevada Appeal thoughtfully and generously reached out to Jared Dempsey and his mother.

We thank you from our hearts. Please be blessed with a deep sense of peace for your kindness. Happy new year.

Why the double standard in school discipline?

This is a question to Richard Stokes: If you were a teacher at Carson Middle School and a student came up to you and asked, "How come they were so harsh on punishment for the children who threatened teachers but rewarded Mr. Santillo last year with a cush job, making the same pay as a principal, for driving with an open container and pot in his car?

My bright 12-year-old has asked me this question and, well, I don't have an answer to it. I thought with all the high praise you have been given for your great work, you would be able to answer that for all the community to hear.

You see, Mr. Stokes, children learn by example, and when you state in the paper that Mr. Santillo is this great principal and you will be hiring him back in a few years, it sends a really terrible message. So if you can answer my question, it will be much appreciated.

For the record, I am not in any way, shape or form making excuses for these girls. I commend the parent who turned them in and I wish the authorities would take anything electronic from these girls until they are responsible adults, so as to hold them accountable for there actions. I am looking forward to your reply.

No logic to authority's tax incentive plans

Our city managers want to develop downtown Carson City. They want more people to visit our downtown. They want new shops, restaurants and events to revitalize our downtown. This is a great idea. We have a wonderful historic downtown area.

So, why are the Redevelopment Authority and our supervisors giving tax incentives to big box stores and chain restaurants which will ultimately kill the remaining downtown business? I love the Olive Garden but I love B'Sghetti's and Garibaldi's, too.

Why are we giving tax incentives to lower-level retail stores such as Big Lots but are hesitant to give tax incentives to an upper-level clothing store such as Gottschalks? Gottschalks brought life to the Carson Mall and people closer to downtown.

I agree with Larry Werner's efforts to obtain the tax incentive for Gottschalks and the Carson Mall. I urge the Redevelopment Authority to rethink their policies and help the businesses in our downtown. And if at all possible, don't let Olive Garden open here.
