Man pleads in assault on deputy

A Sacramento man pleaded guilty Monday to assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly driving his car at a deputy who later fired his weapon at him.

Jack Watson, 37, will be sentenced April 4 for the Jan. 3 incident.

According to police reports, officers were called out to the 400 block of East Lee Street at 3:30 a.m. on a report of a suspicious man with a weapon.

As an officer approached Watson in his car, Watson allegedly gunned the engine and drove toward the deputy.

The vehicle came within six inches of the deputy, according to the report.

The car then slid on the icy streets into a parked vehicle and Watson fled on foot with the deputy in pursuit.

Another officer joined the chase, the report states, and as the first officer rounded the corner he saw the other officer on the ground, and Watson allegedly reaching into his waistband.

The first deputy opened fire, missing both Watson and the other deputy who'd fallen after slipping on ice.

Watson fell to the ground and officers were able to cuff him.

Also before Judge Todd Russell on Monday, Michael Lewis Hunter, 31, was sentenced to 16 to 72 in prison on two counts of burglary. He was arrested on Halloween for burglarizing a garage and vehicles.
