Vernon C. Howell passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on June 30, 2011, at Carson Valley Senior Living in Gardnerville.
He was born Nov. 8, 1914, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to W. Claude and Esther Larsen Howell. He retired from Western Union after 32 years, rising from lineman to various management positions.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Delma Madison Howell; they enjoyed more than 20 years of retirement. He was predeceased by brothers Bob and Ray and sister Jane Johnson. He is survived by son Gary, daughter-in-law Donna; daughter Pat Talamantes; grandaughters Debra Howell, Laura Langham, Wendy Ruvalcaba, Danielle Talamantes, and Angela Jeffries; great-grandchildren Jason, Joshua, Jennifer, Stephani, Chad, Riley, Alana, Eva, and great-great-grandson Landon. He is also survived by brothers Kenny and Larry and sister Betty Fauble. The family will miss his calm, reassuring presence and hope he finds a worthy chess opponent in Heaven.
A memorial service is planned at a later date. We are especially grateful to St. Mary's Hospice, and the Carson Valley Senior Living staff.
