The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City Little League 11-12 all-stars for defeating the favored Washoe team and advancing to the state tournament. Carson came from behind and then exploded with nine seventh-inning runs, earning the distinction of being the first Carson City team to reach the state tourney since 1992.
SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson Nugget for donating $100,000 to send a Western Nevada College photo and poetry exhibit about war to Washington, D.C. Some of the funds will also go toward establishing a scholarship fund for returning veterans. "Always Lost: A Meditation on War" is making headlines across the country, thanks, in part, to the Nugget's donation.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City firefighters who refused to let last week's C Hill fire damage the iconic American flag that's a landmark for locals and tourists alike. The flag, a commemoration of the terrorist attacks in September 2001, has an especially poignant anniversary coming up, as this year marks a decade since the attacks.
SILVER DOLLAR: To the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, and especially to Hal Hansen, executive director of the Carson City location, for giving hundreds of area children and teens a safe, fun place to go over the summer. Customer satisfaction is visible in the kids' smiles as they play sports, enjoy nutritious meals and snacks, play games and learn computer skills.
