Treasurer's office returns $33 million to rightful owners

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada's chief voting official says a special election to fill a House vacancy will cost nearly $1 million.

Secretary of State Ross Miller said in a statement Wednesday that neither the state nor the county officials who will oversee the Sept. 13 election had set aside any cash to hold the contest.

Miller says he is enacting an emergency regulation that will allow counties to submit invoices and other reimbursement documents to the state after the election. Expenses will be reimbursed depending on available funds.

Miller's office didn't immediately respond to a question about where the funding would come from.

During regularly scheduled elections, counties cover the costs.

The special election will fill a vacancy created after Dean Heller left the House in May to fill a Senate vacancy.
