A relic of the past: The Carson Daily Independent, June 30, 1864 - The Appeal office received a copy of the Carson Independent, a yellow, dingy old sheet with the name of Lincoln and Johnson at the head of the columns. Among the columns are found: Hal Clayton issues a challenge to run his blind horse against any other blind horse in the Territory for $500 a side, "the Comstock is not played out, before the snow flies there will be a boom in stocks, and Mark Twain has resigned his position at the Enterprise.

120 YEARS AGO

Advertisement for groceries: "Dry beef 12 1⁄2 cents per lb. - 10 lb. can of lard 90 cents - lemon peel, can-dried per lb. 20 cents - choice raisins, 12 lb. $1.00 - pearl barley 13 1⁄2 lbs. $1.00 - white fish per kit only $1.75 - 6 cans condensed milk $1.00 - 17 lbs. brown sugar, $1.00 - To Be Had at Chas H. Kelly's."

70 YEARS AGO

Enrollment in Nevada Schools is increasing according to statistics released by Miss Mildred Bray. The total enrollment in the kindergartens, elementary and high schools of the state during the 1940-41 year was 24,052.

Photo caption: Sunday was a big day for the First Presbyterian Church on Nevada Street as it held groundbreaking ceremonies for the first phase of its $2 million extension project.

Hornblower Cruise's new yellow shuttle boat, the Meteor, will streak across Lake Tahoe delivering passengers to points around the lake. The passenger boat is intended to shuttle sightseers, kayakers, rafters and cyclists.
