WNC News & Notes: Fall semester deadlines quickly approaching

More than 3,200 students have already enrolled for fall classes at Western Nevada College, and online registration continues at www.wnc.edu. As the Aug. 29 start date approaches, students should be aware of payment deadlines to avoid being dropped from their classes.

• Aug. 12: 80 percent of total fees due, no later than 5 p.m.

• Aug. 26: 100 percent of total fees due, no later than 5 p.m.

• Students enrolled in six or more units may be eligible for a deferred-payment plan in which 1/3 of total fees may be paid in equal installments due Aug. 12, Sept. 12 and Oct. 12. Information: 445-3277.

Classes to prepare students

WNC classes provide students the foundation to earn degrees and start careers in Nevada. A sample of fall offerings include:

• Introduction to Business (BUS 101, multiple sections). Introduces the various areas of the modern business world; a good choice for anyone considering business as a major.

• Introduction to Criminal Justice I (CRJ 101, multiple sections). Studies the history, philosophy and functions of the criminal justice system, including law enforcement, criminal law and constitutional rights.

• Introduction to Digital Photography (ART 141, multiple sections). Teaches students how to use a digital camera and manipulate photos using graphics software. Aesthetic composition and design principles are emphasized.

• Introduction to Early Childhood Education (ECE 250, multiple sections). Studies the history, current regulations, trends and issues related to early childhood education. Focuses on the role of the teacher in enhancing the social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth of preschool-age children.

• Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS 109, class # 80640). Studies the use of computer software packages to store and present information about mapping related functions used for planning and management.

• Introduction to IT Project Management (CIT 263, class # 80277). Teaches techniques and concepts to lead a project in the field of information technology. IT projects may range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks or maintaining information systems.

• Nursing Assistant (NURS 130, multiple sections). Students will learn to function as nursing assistant trainees who assist licensed nurses in providing care to patients in a variety of heath care settings.

Non-credit classes can lead to a career, or better health

Anyone looking to learn a new skill or discover a new hobby may choose non-credit classes at WNC. Fall classes include:

• Beginning Cake Decorating (CMSV 113C, class # 94660). Saturdays, Sept. 3-Dec. 17, 9 a.m.-noon. Learn basic techniques to create beautifully decorated cakes for leisure or as a career. $199.

• Private Pilot Ground School (CMSV 170C, class # 80340). Wednesdays, Aug. 31-Nov. 16, 5:30-9 p.m. Successful completion will prepare students to take the FAA private pilot written test at any authorized computer testing center. Open to anyone 14 years and older. $250.

• Weaving (CMSV 86C, class # 80295). Thursdays, Sept. 1-29, 9-11:30 a.m. Learn to weave using a simple loom. $85.

• Social Ballroom Dance (CMSV 125C, class # 80330). Thursdays, Sept.1-Oct. 20. Introduces waltz, rumba and east coast swing. Partners not required; open to anyone 13 years and older. $78.

• Zen Meditation (CMSV 143C, class #80335). Thursdays, Sept. 8-Oct. 27, 5:30-7 p.m. Explore and develop the art of just sitting. $50.

More than 70 non-credit offerings are available this fall including topics such as audio/video production, arts and crafts, health and fitness, web design, first aid, motorcycle safety and more.
