Daughter plans swim to honor father, combat diabetes

In honor of her father who died last year from diabetes, Monica Marcinko, of We Can, is organizing a Swim for Diabetes next weekend.

The We Can Swim for Diabetes, in honor of her late father who was an avid swimmer and coach, will be 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. June 18 at the Carson City Aquatic Center, 841 N. Roop St.

It will be an open swim in either the indoor or outdoor pool.

There will be refreshments, raffle prizes and information for the adults and games and giveaways for the kids.

Cost is $5 at the door.

Marcinko said everyone needs to take a stand in fighting the disease.

"Diabetes contributes to the deaths of more than 230,000 Americans each year, my father being one of them last year," she said. "One in three American children born today will develop diabetes if current trends continue. We must get our kids more active."
