Auditions scheduled for 'On Golden Pond'

The Carson Valley Community Theatre announces open auditions for their fall production, "On Golden Pond."

All parts need to be cast for this six-character play, including an 80-year-old man, a 69-year-old woman, a woman in her early 40s, and two men in their early 40s, as well as a 13-year-old boy.

Auditions will be 6:30-9 p.m. July 7 and 9 a.m.-noon July 9 at 1669 Lucerne in the Minden Village, Minden.

Performances will take place on Oct. 14-16 and 21-23. Interested thespians can call CVCT at 775-292-0939 for additional information or alternative audition times.

Fifth annual community drive for school supplies

Bauter & Holmes is sponsoring the fifth annual community school supply drive. Donations can be dropped off at Bauter & Holmes, 525 W. Washington St. through Aug. 17. Hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Supplies needed include pens, pencils, paper, facial tissue, hand sanitizer, etc. Monetary donations are also accepted and appreciated. Bauter & Holmes will match a percentage of the amount donated.

Swim for diabetes

Come on out for a day of open swimming at The Carson City Aquatic Facility 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday.

The diabetes-awareness event is sponsored by "WE CAN" (Way's to Enhance Children's Activity and Nutrition).

Both indoor and outdoor pool will be open and there will be refreshments, giveaways, and games for the kids and free raffle prizes and information for the adults.

Cost is $5 at the door. The aquatic facility is located at 841 N. Roop St. (behind the Community Center in Mills Park).

Minden outdoor concert series continues

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department continues the 2011 GE Family Concert Series 6:30-8:30 p.m. June 24 at Minden Park with a free concert by Dave Russell. Bring a low back chair or blanket and enjoy an evening of music in the park. Food will be available to purchase provided by the Tahoe/Douglas Elks Lodge.

Dave Russell is from North Carolina, who has toured the country performing sold-out shows in Nashville, San Antonio, Reno, Biloxi, and all over California.

Additional concerts this summer include Evolution on July 15; Colour My World, A tribute to Chicago on Aug. 5; and Jeff Jones on Aug. 26.

Mormon Station features weekend of fun

Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa presents Pioneer Living History Day on Saturday and Snowshoe Thompson Celebration on Sunday.

From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, bring the family and enjoy a living history day with the Sierra Nevada and Truckee Meadows Mormon Pioneers.

Learn how to make rope and corn-husk dolls, watch Dutch-oven cooking demonstrations, have children play pioneer games, see tools used by early pioneers and enjoy the cannon, muskets and black powder rifles fired each hour, on the hour throughout the day.

From 2-5 p.m. Sunday, celebrate Snowshoe Thompson with folk products displayed by the Sons and Daughters of Norway, Norwegian dancers, Norwegian fjord horses with a cart and a Chautauqua presentation of Snowshoe Thompson, the man who carried the mail in the late 1800s from Genoa to Placerville twice a month for 20 years.

Both days' events are free and open to the public. Visitors are invited to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a day - or two - at the park.

The log-cabin museum will be open for a $1 admission for adults; free for children 12 and younger. Inside, you can see an 1862 Light Cavalry sword on display for the first time in more than 40 years.

VFW meetings scheduled

Veterans of Foriegn Wars Post 3726 monthly meeting will be at 6 p.m. June 28.

In addition, there will be an organzation meeting to start a Carson City chapter of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW. That meeting will also begin at 6 p.m.

July 4th golf event supports U.S. troops

Thunder Canyon, a private golf and country club located in Washoe Valley, is inviting the public to play 18 holes of golf on July 4th in support of "Tee It Up For The Troops." This tournament hosted by Thunder Canyon and its membership will be open to the public, with proceeds from the tournament and any donations going to the campaign.

Tee it up for the Troops was established in 2005 by the family and friends of a soldier who enlisted in the U.S. Army after Sept. 11, 2001. When the son was asked by his father what he needed, the son responded by asking his father to do something for the soldiers and their families back home. Tee It Up For The Troops was created to honor that request and to recognize the needs of all veterans who have served and continue to serve this nation.

In its inaugural year of 2005, Tee it up for the Troops raised over $80,000. Today, they have raised over $3 million dollars and hold events at more than 100 courses throughout the country. The proceeds of Tee It Up For The Troops benefit numerous programs that support veterans and their families.

Opening ceremony begins at 9 a.m. followed immediately by a shotgun start.

This day of golf includes 18 holes with a cart and a barbecue lunch. Cost is $80 per player, $60 for all active or retired military personnel. To sign-up, please contact the Thunder Canyon Golf Shop at (775) 882-4597. Space is limited and sign-ups will be completed by July 1.

Openings available at campus preschool

The Child Development Center located on the Carson City campus of Western Nevada College has several full- and part-time preschool openings for children from 3-6 years of age.

Horsemen's association offers trail trial

The Lyon County Horseman's Association Trail Trial will be June 25 at the Horse Camp area at Fort Churchill State Historic Park. Sign-in is at 8:30 a.m. with first riders out around 9:30 a.m.

There are youth, adult, senior divisions, and all divisions have novice, intermediate and advanced skill levels.

Cost is $30 youth, $35 adult ($5 discount if pre-entered by June 20), $10 schooling/companion rider.

The group will also be offering poker hands, $5 each, and will have some great raffle items at $1 per ticket. Lunch is included with entry fee.

Coin show raffle tickets now on sale

In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Nevada Territory, the Nevada State Museum staff designed a raffle prize to celebrate this year's coin show, set for Aug. 26-27.

Raffle tickets are now on sale for the grand prize, featuring three commemoratives: one ounce .999 fine silver medallion, celebrating the 150th anniversary; copper Abraham Lincoln medallion; and brass Nevada State Seal medallion. This prize is framed with a photo of the Carson City Mint and valued at $600. Other prizes include a $500 gift certificate to Northern Nevada Coin, and three 1884 GSA Carson City silver dollars, donated by Northern Nevada Coin.

The prizes are on display in the Dema Guinn Concourse. Tickets are $1 each or six for $ 5, and can be purchased over the phone by calling 687-4810, Ext. 237. Proceeds from the sale of the raffle tickets support education and exhibits at the museum.

The grand prize drawing will take place at 3 p.m. Aug. 27; lesser prizes will be raffled throughout the show. Winners not need to be present to win.

The Carson City Mint Coin Show features coins and collectibles, food sales by Friends of the Nevada State Museum, music, gold panning, numismatic education, and Coin Press No. 1 demonstrations. Silver Sponsors include the Nevada Appeal, and Northern Nevada Coin; sponsors include Downtown Coin and Friends of the Nevada State Museum.
