$1 million available for water pollution prevention

Nevada's Division of Environmental Protection has received $1 million in federal money to fund grants that prevent orcontrol nonpoint source water pollution.

Nonpoint source water pollution occurs when rain, snowmelt or irrigation water flows over disturbed land, picking up contaminents such as oil and pesticides and carries those contaminents to Nevada's waterways.

"Nonpoint source pollution remains the biggest threat to Nevada's waterways," said Birgit Widegren, supervisoro of the division's program.

She said the grant money will pay for projects to help reduce that threat.

Those seeking grant money can get a ruling on whether their project is eligible by submitting it by July 8. The application form can be downloaded at http://ndep.nv.gov/npsgrant.htm

Proposals will be accepted from July 18 through Sept. 9.

More information is available from Widegren at 775-687-9550.
