Program will show how city maintains its equilibrium

While other communities are letting go hundreds of government workers, Carson City has managed to keep its employee base intact this year. How was this done?

The public is invited to attend a special program sponsored by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce at noon June 29 at the Gold Dust West Casino where Mayor Bob Crowell and others will answer this question and more during the State of the City address.

"If you live or work in Carson City, this will be an important luncheon meeting for you to assess how we will fare during this next fiscal year," said Ronni Hannaman, chamber director.

Networking will start at 11:30 a.m., with lunch and the program to follow. The Gold Dust West chefs have created a special menu just for this occasion, she said.

In addition to the mayor, the program will include presentations from Supervisor and Redevelopment Authority Chairwoman Shelly Aldean, Sheriff Kenny Furlong and School Board President Joanna Wilson.

Those who attend will learn:

• How Carson City has managed to maintain its equilibrium during these fragile economic times.

• What challenges the taxpayer will face as a result of what the Legislature has imposed.

• How a multi-million public/private complex now being negotiated for Carson City would be funded when other communities are staving off any new community projects.

• How Carson City is able to move forward to update schools when other communities are cutting back on school improvements.

• How the city's crime statistics seem to be on the decrease when the sheriff's force is smaller than in previous years.

• How the city has managed to stay solvent when only 20 percent of its land is taxable.

• Why the city continues to attract new national business.
