Out & About: Fourth is just around the corner

Virginia City's Fourth of July Parade & Fireworks

It's a toss up which 4th of July event to attend. If you time it right, you can head up to Virginia City for the parade and fun and be back in Carson for the fireworks. Both cities know how to make July 4th a great time, so either choice is a great choice.

Virginia City is all about the red, white and blue all-day patriotic extravaganza. Starting with an old-fashioned parade, face painting, great music and food. And finally, watch the spectacular fireworks in beautiful Virginia City. Watch out for the gun slingers. Bring the kids as there will be free give-a-ways.

Soroptimist International 34th annual Chili Cook-off

The Chili Cook-off always attracts great chefs from far and wide offering their own unique tastes of chili made with strict guidelines, and I do mean strict. Since they are competing for a place to qualify in the International Chili Society's sanctioned cook-offs, including the 2011 World Championship, this is not only a tasty event but has some major bragging rights to go with the win. I personally enjoyed the salsa contest last year. It was absolutely delicious.

Besides chili competitors, Local crafters will also be set up for the two day event, along with live music, hamburgers, hot dogs, beer and soda and lots of family fun. Soroptimist International of Carson City will be selling chili tasting kits and hosting a terrific raffle with fabulous prizes.
