Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels: Silver to shooters representing the Silver State

The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To 17-year-old Bryce James and 14-year-old Tim Syriac who were in Texas last week representing Nevada in the 4-H Shooting Sports Match.

Bryce is a member of the Storey County Comstock Hot Shots 4-H Shooting Sports Club. This is Tim's third year with 4-H Shooting Sports.

"They have worked hard to achieve the level of success that enabled them to apply to the national match," Sandy Wallin, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's Carson City/Storey County Office, 4-H and Youth Programs.

Both 4-H'ers have received help in the way of scholarships from State 4-H Shooting Sports Advisory Committee and home town clubs and fundraisers.

WOODEN NICKEL: While having enough snow to snow ski on the Fourth of July holiday is a good thing for tourism, it has it drawbacks. The heavy precipitation throughout the region during the winter and spring months will result in a late-arriving fire season this summer, fire officials said. But there will be a lot of brush to fuel fires that will occur.

SILVER DOLLAR: For the last 10 years Penny Holbrook's name has been synonymous with the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada.

"I love the museum," said Holbrook, a volunteer and member of the board of directors. "I'm an old kindergarten teacher. When we came into town, I knew what I wanted to do."

Ms. Penny, as she is known to the children, was a fixture at the Books & Brags events, where she reads to the children who show up and then they work on crafts related to the book.

Today she will be honored with an ice cream social from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the museum.

"They think I'm really leaving, but I'm not," she said. "I refuse to give it up completely."

We wish her well in (semi) retirement.
