Fireworks possession can result in citation

It doesn't matter how safe or sane the fireworks are, they still are illegal along the Sierra Front and in the Tahoe Basin for anyone who isn't doing a licensed community event.

"Anyone who possesses or uses fireworks will have them seized and they will be cited into justice court," East Fork Fire Capt. Terry Taylor said Monday.

Fire and law enforcement officials will be keeping an eye out for people using fireworks.

"If you see someone using fireworks call 911 and report it immediately," he said.

With a storm front bringing high winds and lower humidity this week, fire season is here, Taylor said.

"The wind will wick the moisture out of all the vegetation," he said.

Fireworks are illegal in all the counties bordering the east slope of the Sierra, including Douglas, Lyon, and Washoe counties and Carson City.

Taylor said he hasn't had too many instances of illegal fireworks in the last week.

"I think Fourth of July snuck up on a lot of people," he said. "It was just a couple of weeks ago that it still seemed like winter."

There are plenty of legal fireworks shows being held Monday in Western Nevada, including Lights on the Lake at Lake Tahoe and the RSVP Fair in Carson City.

Kirkwood will be launching fireworks on Sunday. Fireworks shows go off after the sun goes down, which is about 8:30 p.m.
