Tahoe regulatory agency cuts 8 staff positions

STATELINE, Nev. (AP) - The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency announced Friday it has slashed eight staff positions, including that of Deputy Director Jerry Wells.

TRPA Executive Director Joanne Marchetta says the bistate land-use regulatory agency also is making 12 other position changes to address a looming $1.3 million budget deficit.

She says the reorganization includes reducing the number of agency planners because of a decline in permit fees, and eliminating the shorezone implementation team because of a recent court decision that struck down TRPA's shorezone ordinances.

Over the last three years, the agency has taken steps to cut expenses, including layoffs, salary freezes, work furloughs, travel and training cuts, and the closure of its north shore office.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the agency now has 68 employees, down from 90 three years ago.
