Activities for the collaborative community read with Douglas County have begun, and now is a great time to sign up, as seating is limited. Making of Ukrainian Easter Eggs premiers 1-5 p.m. March 18, in the library auditorium and is limited to twelve participants. The artistic endeavor, which involves drawing patterns with wax on eggs, dyeing the egg and repeating the process, produces intricate designs, some of which are thousands of years old.
A unique book club discussion at 3 p.m. March 29 will be modeled after the book club in Ms. Barrows' novel, enabling readers to discuss not only "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society," but also compare it with books of similar themes. Related topics include interesting destinations, war-time fiction and non-fiction, strong women, complicated relationships, long-distance friendships, the disappearing communication of letter-writing and much more. Some suggested novels include Laura Hillenbrand's best seller, "Unbroken," Ivan Doig's "The Eleventh Man" and Keri Hulme's "The Bone People."
Upcoming children's activities
• The LEGO Club meets 10 a.m. - noon March 20, in the auditorium. Working with LEGOs inspires creativity, design, construction and hones engineering skills. The LEGO Mindstorms Robotic Invention System is an engineering component at many universities and an engineering professor at WNC was instrumental in starting the library program. Engrossing play could very well lead to a dynamic career.
• The therapy dogs and owners who make Love on a Leash possible are enthused about the program that it has expanded to twice a month. The second March program will be held 1-2 p.m. March 20, in the Children's Room. After reading to the dogs, children will receive a free book to take home.
• Family Story Times are in full swing at 10:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Learning begins at an early age and reading programs assist children overcome barriers to success.
• Bilingual story time enables children to listen to a story in both English and Spanish. Crafts and refreshments are provided. Bilingual Story Time meets 6 p.m. Thursday.
Nevada Legal Services discussion
Foreclosures are complicated, frightening and all too prevalent in our community and state. Nevada Legal Services continues an informative discussion on this topic at 2 p.m. March 14, in the auditorium. This series of programs has been very well attended and registration is not necessary.
Computer tutors offered
If the rapid evolution of computer technology seems overwhelming, computer tutors are available at the library for one-on-one instruction. A one-hour session can be reserved on Mondays from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. and Tuesdays-Thursdays from 3-4 p.m. One of the helpful library staff will be glad to assist you.
