Bill would require service for Nevada scholarship

(AP) - Students will have to complete 20 hours of community service to receive the Gov. Guinn Millennium Scholarship if a new bill passes.

The Senate Education Committee on Wednesday passed SB96, which requires community service hours with the state, a political subdivision of the state or a charitable organization that serves Nevada residents.

Students would have to complete the community service activities in the four years prior to when they become eligible for the scholarship.

Boulder City Republican Sen. Joe Hardy is sponsoring the bill.

Other requirements for the Millennium Scholarship, including the 3.25 minimum GPA, would remain intact.

The bill now heads to the Senate floor. If it passes, it will take effect for students who would receive the scholarship on or after June 1, 2014.
