The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: To the staff of the Carson Aquatic Facility for their life saving working in October. The facility and staff were honored last week by Care Flight. In October, lifeguards used the facility's automated external defibrillator and administered CPR to an 11-year-old boy. The lifeguards and Carson City Fire Department, using advanced life support procedures and medications, were able to restore a pulse. The outcome was positive and the patient survived thanks to the quick, decisive actions and care of the Carson pool staff, fire department, and medical center staff.
"I'm extremely proud of the way our staff handled such a critical situation," Pool Director Kurt Meyer said.
We are extremely thankful for the quick thinking and calmness of staff in this tense moment.
WOODEN NICKEL: It appears the opposite of the saying "March comes in like a lion and goes out like lamb," may be true this month. After having spring-like temperatures and little precipitation in the valley for the first half of the month, Mother Nature is making up for it with cold temperatures, lots of wind and that pesky white stuff. Come on March, take a cue from our feline friend, the lion - find a nice shady tree and take a nap.
SILVER DOLLAR: To the more than 1,500 students who rallied at the Nevada Legislature on Tuesday. The students were opposing budget cuts to the higher education system proposed by Gov. Brian Sandoval. While the final budget is a few months away, the fact that so many students turned out and got involved in the process offers great hope for the future. We encourage all students to stay involved and informed in the process and make your voices heard.
