The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: On this Mother's Day we give a Silver Dollar to moms everywhere. We also give a Silver Dollar to Thane Cornell of Carson City who penned this poem about mothers:
A Mother's Heart
When she wanted you to live up to
the picture she designed
All she wanted was the best for you
in her heart of hearts and mind.
Whenever she ranted and scolded you so
or threatened to send you to bed
Did you ever think to take to heart
the things your mother said?
"I'll box your ears if you don't behave"
my own mom often stated
Still I never knew then just what she meant
and now it's sadly belated.
We hardly ever stop to think
that mothers mean so well
While we, ourselves, just know it all
and too often choose to rebel.
She's there for us though we judge her wrong
and with her disagree
Yet she always presents the picture that
the best is yet to be.
And if she's now an angel, like mine,
no longer of this space
And there is none could ever fill
her instructive loving place,
Just carry the highest thoughts of her
then try to live the part
According to that picture of you
once held in your mother's heart.
