130 YEARS AGO

Linnett vs. alarm clock: A gentlemen residing near the Opera House called Justice Court to enter a complaint against a lady who owned a linnet (house finch) in a room next to his. He swore that the linnet was a disturber of the peace, kept him awake early in the morning with incessant chatter. The District Attorney declined to take legal cognizance of the matter and the man said he would purchase eight alarm clocks that would indulge mechanical concerts at various hours of the night. However, the bird heard the clocks so much that it began to imitate them. The lady is now paying boys a dollar apiece for linnets and proposes to have at least two dozen. The man with the clocks considers them a failure and is talking of purchasing a ten-stamp quartz mill.

All sorts: The transit of Mercury was successfully observed by C. W. Friend and his assistants Saturday. Nobody was hurt.

Shamburger: Hugh Shamburger and H. E. "Hap" Hazard, both of Carson City were elected chairman and secretary of the State Council of Defense by Gov. E. P. Carville.

Theme for the RSVP Spring Fun Fair in Mills Park will be a "Salute to Moms." On Mother's Day, all moms can ride carnival rides for free.
