Greenhouse offers garden seminars

Greenhouse Garden Center continues its tradition of weekly garden seminars with several planned for the remaining weekends of May. All seminars are free.

Today, David Ruf, owner of the center, presents "Let's Talk Tomatoes and Peppers" starting at 9 a.m. today.

In addition to the seminar the Carson High Jazz Band will perform at the center 11 a.m.-1 p.m. May 14.

Additional seminars planned for May are:

• May 21, 9 a.m. -Continuous Summer Color with Perennials

• May 22, 10 a.m. - Shade Gardening in Northern Nevada

• May 28, 9 a.m. - Growing Grapes and Berries in Northern Nevada, with David Ruf and special guest Jack Jacobs of Jacobs Family Berry Farm located in Gardnerville

• May 28, 1 p.m. - Container Planting with Janet

Extension offers ag conference for women and youth

Women and youth agricultural producers from Nevada, Idaho and Utah are invited to Las Vegas June 14 through 16 for the Great Basin Women and Youth in Agriculture Conference, designed to help both new and established producers learn how to effectively manage their farming or ranching business.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) conference will cover various financial, production, marketing, legal and human-resource issues related to agriculture. There will be workshops on small-business planning; arid-region agricultural production; small-farm marketing tactics; food-safety practices; farm-to-school opportunities; and management of family farm enterprises.

Registration for the three-day event is $125, and Cooperative Extension has secured a special hotel room rate at the Point Hotel & Casino for traveling guests at $49 per night. To register, visit: http://www.unce.unr.edu/adhoc/rmaconf.
