SPRING CREEK (AP) - The Nevada Quarter Horse Association has canceled a show scheduled at the Elko County Fairgrounds on Saturday in response to the spread of a virus that broke out earlier this month at cutting horse championships in Ogden, Utah.
Show secretary Jamie Vega says it is a precautionary measure to help guard against further cases of the contagious and potentially fatal Equine Herpes Virus-1.
No cases have been confirmed in Nevada so far, although officials in Elko and Washoe counties say they are awaiting results of some tests from horses that possibly could be infected.
Arizona reported its first case on Wednesday, joining Idaho, Utah, Colorado, California, Washington and Canada with confirmed cases. At least 18 horses have been infected with the virus and at least three have died.
