Anacabe's Elko General Merchandise won a contract worth $128,000 through the State of Nevada's Purchasing Division to provide inmate fire crews with fireproof boots.
Owner Ann Anacabe says that although such contracts typically have very small profit margins, any type of revenue is extremely important in the wake of reduced sales during the past few years.
"You can't bid cost plus 10 that's too much," Anacabe says. "But if I had another bad year like 2009 my store would be closed."
Anacabe's Elko General Merchandise is one of Elko's oldest businesses. Anacabe's father founded the business in the early 1920s in McDermitt and moved the business to Elko in 1936. Ann Anacabe has run the store since 1976.
Elko General Merchandise sells a wide range of clothing and footwear for many different industries.
"We take care of working people," Anacabe says. "It doesn't matter if you are a man or woman if you work we have something for you, whether you are a rancher, a miner, a construction worker, a buckaroo or tourist. We are a destination place for lot of people; you don't see stores like mine anymore."
