When the library was built, its primary focus was books, and Carson City was a community of around 30,000. Today, the library serves more than 50,000 residents, as well as visitors from surrounding counties, and with the advent of technology and digital media, the configuration needs to adapt. The second phase of the state-of-the-art automated materials handling system, which checks in books faster and enables the staff to concentrate on patrons, arrives soon and results in a new look and arrangement. The library will be closed for a brief time, probably in early June, and will reopen in time for the Summer Reading Program (June 11).
Library Board of Trustees meeting slated for Thursday
Last month the Library Board of Trustees discussed the educational and economic importance of a digital media lab.
The topic for this month's meeting is the possible economic benefit of a downtown public library and a library's place as a catalyst for community growth and activity.
The business-oriented BRIC is already a bustling resource and it is hoped that a downtown library attracts new businesses and increases viability of current enterprises. The board meets at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Sierra Room at the Community Center.
