Jobs Peak Weed Control of Minden won a contract worth $121,636 from the Bureau of Land Management to maintain weed control for firebreaks along fence lines that parallel roadways in Humboldt and Washoe counties.
The five-year contract will provide a significant revenue stream for Jobs Peak owner Jeffrey VanNest, who worked as a construction inspector until he was laid off in the recession.
"These contracts are a lot of fun, and the government is a great place to work if you can get them," VanNest says.
VanNest says the majority of his work is performing weed control services at residences with large lots throughout the Reno-Sparks area, but he has landed a few federal weed control contracts over the past few years. VanNest began bidding on federal weed control projects about three years ago.
"The government contract for me is great because it is a five-year contract, which really helps out the small guy," VanNest says.
