While Western Nevada College Vice President of External Affairs Helaine Jesse Morres is planning her retirement, the WNC Foundation is planning a roast in her honor. The event is Friday, June 17, 6 p.m., at the Carson Nugget. Tickets include a plated dinner and dessert for $100 per person and $800 for a table of eight. A no-host bar will be available. The roast will benefit WNC athletics, the Jack C. Davis Observatory, the Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company, and Fallon campus scholarships.
Jesse, who has headed the WNC Foundation for two decades and is know for her playful sense of humor, says, "This will be the last time I'll ever ask you for money ... maybe!" For tickets/information: Leslie Townsend, 445-3240.
Honor Society inducts new members
Western Nevada College's Carson City campus chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, inducted more than 60 members during a ceremony at the college.
Phi Theta Kappa emphasizes the attributes of leadership, scholarship, fellowship, and community service, and encourages members to be actively involved in their college and community.
To be eligible for membership, a student must complete a minimum of 12 hours of associate degree course work and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher throughout their enrollment in the two-year college.

Student earns speech competition award
WNC student Curtis Drinkwine won second place in the 2011 Alliance of Racial Minorities speech contest. He spoke on the topic: "The effects of the current economic downturn on diversity in higher education."
In addition to the recognition, Drinkwine received a $150 scholarship and kudos from WNC History Instructor Lane Simonian, who congratulated him "for his thoughtful and well-delivered speech."
Required OSHA training class available
WNC will offer a 10-hour OSHA Construction Safety class, Wednesday-Thursday from 8 a.m.- 3 p.m. at the Carson City campus. Cost is $45.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration class teaches construction workers the fundamentals of managing worksite safety and health, and is designed to help individuals stay up to date with OSHA safety requirements. The course reviews OSHA-mandated topics, including an introduction to OSHA, tips on how to locate OSHA regulations, electrical safety, and fall protection. Personal protective equipment, occupational health, hand and power tools, excavations, scaffolds, and stairway and ladder safety will be covered. A Department of Labor OSHA-10 construction card will be issued via mail to those who successfully complete the course.

Summer science class for teaching professionals
Local teachers are invited to enroll in a three-week summer course at WNC to develop basic skills and classroom resources in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. STEM-Tools and Applications (EDP 295B, Special Topics in Educational Professional Development, Call # 20238, 3 credits) will meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, July 11-29, 5-10 p.m., at the Jack C. Davis Observatory, WNC Carson City. Cost: $233.25. The class is team taught by WNC professors Robert Collier, Thomas Herring and Michelle Rousselle. It focuses on increasing physical science knowledge through hands-on activities, team projects, experiments and tools that teachers can apply in their classrooms. To register, www.wnc.edu
