A registered sex offender who was picked up for being at an ice arena has violated his federal probation for possession of child pornography.

South Lake Tahoe Sgt. Brian Williams said Thursday that Joseph Scanio was re-arrested on a federal warrant for violation of his supervised release by being present at the ice arena without authorization from the U.S. Probation Office.

Federal officials were contacted by South Lake Tahoe police after officers observed Scanio at the ice arena adjacent to the City Recreation Center on Rufus Allen Boulevard.

Scanio also was in violation for living within an area restricted from convicted sex offenders.

Scanio was taken into custody at his Wyoming Avenue address by South Lake Tahoe police.

According to reports, he previously disclosed his business affiliation with another registered sex offender in El Dorado County. Federal officials said that was not a violation of his probation, but they are investigating issues which may constitute additional violations.

South Lake Tahoe police contacted Scanio at the ice arena on May 16 after a citizen reported a suspicious person. He was arrested May 18 for failure to register his current address with law enforcement which led to contact with federal officials.
