Senator Square: Scholarship available to help students get to college

A great new scholarship opportunity is available to Carson High School students. Casey, Neilon and Associates wants to help ninth- through 11th-grade students who are college-bound with a 3.5 minimum grade-point average and need something (laptop computer, Internet service, books, backpacks, etc.) to help them attain their goals.

Applications are available in the guidance office. The due date is June 10.

Ms. Emond's integrated algebra class conducted its cultural math final.

The math part of this assignment is taking the recipes and changing them using the proper calculations in case the recipe does not cover food to feed the class.

This assignment was first tried last year and the result was surprisingly successful. The students were very proud of themselves and it showed in their demeanor.

Carson High School Performing Arts' advanced students, studying third- and fourth-year theater, will present two nights of original work 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Cost is $5 and will be at the Maizie Harris Jesse Theatre at the Brewery Arts Center.

Centered around the concept of communication, the work is thought-provoking, funny and creative. Bring your cell phone and leave it on! It will be part of the show.

This week, CHS is spotlighting senior Elayna Shine.

Her senior class load includes advanced-placement courses in calculus, government and literature, along with media portfolio and athletic conditioning.

She maintains a grade-point average of 4.2. Elayna has played varsity basketball for four years and was team captain this year. She's played varsity golf for four years, varsity softball sophomore year, and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Elayna also works part-time for the Carson City Recreation Department. She plans to attend University of Nevada, Reno, in the fall, where she will pursue nursing. We are proud of Elayna, and thankful for all the contributions she has made to Carson High School academically and athletically.
