(AP) - Nevada senators are putting the final nail in the coffin of a measure making counties pay for mental health courts.
A Senate committee on Tuesday effectively killed the bill implementing the governor's recommendation of charging counties for $6 million in services currently provided by the state.
Legislators had already restored money in the budget for the program. Killing the bill is an extra step to make sure the idea does not come back this session.
Mental health courts intercept people who commit a crime and also have a mental illness. The program provides participants with a case worker and housing. Offenders also meet with a judge on a weekly basis and are held accountable for taking their medications.
The program's fate has been uncertain through most of the session.
