DMV officials say avoid long lines that follow a holiday

DMV officials are warning motorists that the four-day weekend surrounding Thanksgiving will make for long lines at their offices Monday.

Director Bruce Breslow said the Monday following Thanksgiving is traditionally the department's busiest of the year - so busy that staff members have taken to calling it "Black Monday."

"Wait times can easily double or triple to two hours or longer," he said. "Enjoy your time more by staying away from the DMV on Monday."

Breslow said there are numerous alternatives to actually visiting a DMV office starting with the website, www.dmvvnv.com, which allows registration renewals among other services.

Kiosks offer registration services and driver history printouts and most insurance issues can be handled on the Internet or by phone. Transactions such as address changes and custom license plate orders can be done by mail or fax.

He said those who must visit an office can check current wait times on the department website or by downloading DMV's iPhone app.

DMV offices are closed until Monday. Offices also will be closed Monday, Dec. 26 and Monday, Jan. 2 - also traditionally very busy days.
